Facsimile Lute Performance Series, Volume 1
Author: Philip Horne
Publication date: 2017
Spiral-bound

This book was assembled for the player who prefers to play from facsimiles. Facsimile copies of the original printed books are great to play from; unfortunately, due to the size of many of these books, performance requires page turns. The goal of this volume, and of this series, is to construct facsimile play books for performers using modern tools.

As I’ve played with others, I’ve seen many clever tricks used to make playing copies of these pieces. Some use the fold out method–where they photocopy the page turns and then tape them to the edges of the facsimile book and fold them out when they want to perform. Some use the cut and tape method, where they photocopy and then tape the cut photocopies to blank pages. Some have tried to go new school using a tablet and foot switch page turner. My hope is that this current volume is a clean and fumble-free version of these other old and new school methods. Given that Mr. Petrucci was himself a printing innovator, using the most modern and up-to-date technology he possessed to create beautiful and clear printed books, I hope that he would approve of this volume (though he might perhaps have been jealous of his copywrite!)

There are some page turns in this volume. This is unfortunate, but necessary due to the length of some of the pieces.

Ottaviano Petrucci was an early printer of books of vocal and lute music. He is known for the clarity and care with which he worked. Certainly, as you can see in these facsimiles, the text is easy for the player to read. The extant lute works from his press are two books by Francesco Spinacino, one by Juan Albrosio Dalza and two by Franciscus Bossinensis which are primarily books of frottola, but contain some recercares. Those are included in this volume. The music is high quality, its mastery could be a performer’s lifetime work.

As far as possible I have tried to channel the spirit of Mr. Petrucci and make this book clear and easy to use. The facsimiles have been taken from IMSLP, and so are in the public domain. Some of the facsimiles are direct photos and some were “photoshopped” to remove the yellow page background and leave the printed text only. The yellow page background appeals to me personally because there is a “feeling” of being there in the anteroom of some Venetian trader’s house as the family relaxes in the evening playing music from these volumes; but the abstracted text is certainly clearer to read, particularly if the light is low in the performance setting.

This is great music spanning ability level from easy to virtuosic. It is hoped that this volume, and this series, will make these texts more accessible for the modern player.
